Our Story

Our Story

Ladies Realm Ltd was founded in Redditch, Worcestershire, in 1954 by Eric and Pam Stubbs. On a family holiday to the New Forest in 1960, they took a day trip to the Isle of Wight and were attracted to a corner-site store for sale in Sandown High Street. The first Ladies Realm on the island was opened in April 1961. The business transferred entirely to the Isle of Wight when their daughter, Sue, joined the company.

A branch was opened in Shanklin in the late 1960s and moved to a larger, corner site in 2000. The 1970s saw two small shops opened in Ryde, which were later sold to move to the larger premises at 3&4 High Street. In Sandown the LR branch known as Bed, Body & Beach was opened in 2004 selling nightwear, lingerie and swimwear, as well as costume jewellery. This branch has since closed and the ranges moved in to the main corner site. As the High Streets have suffered with fewer people each year, LR has most recently decided to close the Shanklin store in 2020.

LR is still very much a family affair; Sue continues to help daughter Nicky with the buying and remains a Director, Nicky runs the shops and Sue's sister Jennie is Company Secretary, running the accounts and office. Retailing certainly runs in the family; Sue started her career at Rackhams in Birmingham, Jennie studied at the College for the Distributive Trades and worked in John Lewis, Oxford St, and Nicky merchandised pet shops around the UK before joining island fashion store Visual Impact.

LR has always strived to give its customers the very best selection of stock at unbeatable value for money prices and excellent customer service. Our aim is to offer fashions that are a little different to the High St chains, at realistic prices. As our branches are located in tourist destinations, we pride ourselves on our selection of leisurewear, beach and swimwear, along with casual holiday attire. LR is a member of the Association of Independent Stores and carries their womenswear brand First Avenue, a co-ordinated range exclusive to us on the island. Sue and Nicky share the responsibility of buying, and although a percentage of merchandise is bought six months in advance of the season, they find regular trips to London are required to keep ahead of the current fashion trends.

Ladies Realm's first store on the Isle of Wight, in Sandown High Street, circa 1960. Formally two shops, major alterations took place in 1969 to extend the interior and frontage. In the 1980s the store took on a new, updated look, incorporating a more modern logo to compliment the company's mix of more modern fashions.
